India Street group invests over RM50 mln in MetroCity

KUCHING: Business owners from India Street Pedestrian Mall have purchased 45 units of commercial shops worth over RM50 million at the MetroCity-Matang New Township near here.

This was revealed during a recent signing of Sale and Purchase Agreement at the offices of Chong Kia Hoi Realty Sdn Bhd (CKH Realty), the developer of MetroCity. The India Street group investing in MetroCity includes renowned business operators Hung Cheong Jewellers, Wan Fatt Trading, Dragon City Trading and Syarikat Jasmine. The range of businesses operated by the group includes textiles, fashion, jewellery, time pieces, pharmacy, groceries, and restaurants.

"We are grateful to have such tremendous support from the respected India Street business community. With decades of experience and sharp business acumen, their decision to invest heavily and operate in MetroCity is a great honour to us and speaks volumes of the potential of our new township," said CKH Realty chairman and managing director Chong Kia Hoi.

He added that the group`s success story showed their wisdom in investments.

"To have the business participation of the group, the fact that they bought more than RM50 million worth of investment only shows their confidence in the MetroCity project," Chong said adding that CKH Realty is currently in negotiations with three international hypermarket brands to operate at the project`s shopping mall.

The new development would also include a pedestrian mall.

MetroCity is a 183-acre integrated township development at Jalan Matang Lama, less than 5km from the city centre.

Its commercial precinct comprises 314 commercial shops, two-storey commercial mall, six-storey private medical centre, four-storey 120-room hotel, integrated bus terminal, six-storey urban college, two petrol stations, a 24-hour fast-food drive through restaurant, three-storey showroom and other social facilities.

"Construction for MetroCity shops will commence by the end of March 2012 or early April. It is targeted to complete within three years," said Chong, adding that about 80 per cent of the shops have been sold.

Among those present at the signing were CKH Realty director David Chong and company lawyer Danny Chan of Messrs Chan and Chan Advocates, who witnessed the execution of the agreements.
